PAPER

How much paper is recycled ?

Cardboard and paper are both made from cellulose, a wood fibre. . It is therefore a material with biodegradable natural origins. In 2021, 62% of this material is recycled in France (source:  Citéo). It can be recycled up to eight times, and can take different forms : it can be used again for cardboard boxes, magazines, notebooks, milk cartons, paper napkins, or even bottles !

Recyclable paper and cardboard is disposed of in the yellow bin and/or in the yellow collection points.

PLASTIC

Plastic is a material with various uses, but also with diverse origins: it can come from both oil and plant, such as salt or sugar cane. According to Citeo, 30% of plastic waste is recycled in France in 2021. Recyclable two or three times, all its forms have their place in the yellow bin, since the 2023 sorting deposit extensions.

Recyclable plastic packaging is disposed of in the yellow bin and/or in the yellow collection points.

PET

Derived from petroleum, polyethylene terephthalate is mainly used for the design of bottles and disposable food and cosmetic packaging.

Recycled, it can be used as fabric, padding, pen, or simply new bottles.

It is identifiable with the number 1.

HDPE

Also from petroleum, the high strength of high-density polyethylene allows it to serve as a container for more corrosive materials. It can be used to design bottles or bottle caps.

The recycled HDPE can take the form of bottles, but can also become flakes for films, sheets or pipes.

It is identifiable with the number 2.

PVC

Polyvinyl chloride is composed of 43% petroleum, but also 57% salt. It is mainly used in industry, especially in the design of pipes, but it is also used to design toys, or vinyl records.

Recycled, it can become a textile fiber used as padding.

It is identifiable with the number 3.

LDPE

Low density polyethylene is a bioplastic originating in sugar cane. Flexible, it is used to design plastic bags, bins, isotherms, food plastic films or plastic food pouches

After recycling, it can take the form of a garbage bag, or agricultural films.

It is identifiable with the number 4.

PP

Polypropylene comes from petroleum, and makes it possible to design eco-cups, gourds, reusable plastic dishes, reusable and disposable food jars and trays.

Once recycled, it can take the form of disposable food trays and jars, material for the automotive industry, but also textile fibers.

It is identifiable with the number 5.

PS

Polystyrene is made from petroleum, and allows to design trays, jars, and disposable dishes.

Recycled, it is used for padding but also for insulation.

It is identifiable with the number 6.

OTHER

Here are listed various forms such as polycarbonate, nylon, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA – also known as acrylic), polylactic acid (PLA)… Examples include baby bottles, CDs and DVDs, glasses…

They can, once recycled, become components for the automotive industry, or electronics.

They are identifiable with the number 7.

Only packaging is recycled : plastic items are not recyclable, such as toys, CD boxes, audio and video cassettes, helmets, hangers, rubber, and those that are not PP, PS, PET, or PVC. Contaminated plastics (organic matter residues) are not to be thrown into the yellow bag either.

Metal packaging

Metals are of natural origin, more precisely, originating in ores. Household packaging is mainly made of steel and aluminum: cans, cans, coffee capsules, lids, trays, bottle caps, aerosols, pocket compotes, tablet pads, etc. 100% of metal packaging is recyclable. Currently, 58% of aluminum is recycled in France. 50% of the steel comes from recycled steel. Once recycled, they can take the same forms as in their former life, and this to infinity.

Recyclable metal packaging is disposed of in the yellow bin and/or yellow collection points.

Aluminum foil is not recycled, and is to be thrown into household waste.

GLASS

Composed of sand and modifying agents, mainly soda and lime, but also alumina, magnesia and potash, it is currently the most recycled material in France, at 88%. It is infinitely recyclable, and can take the same forms as before, and even take others: recycling and recovery does not alter its quality.

Recyclable glass packaging is disposed of in the white bin and/or green collection points.
