Infectious clinical waste

Dasri

For nearly 10 years, our company has expanded its field of expertise and knowledge: we are able to design and build units for the treatment of Infectious Risk Care Activity Waste.

According to Article R1335-1 in French law, DASRI are “waste from the activities of diagnosis, monitoring and preventive, curative or palliative treatment, in the fields of human and veterinary medicine.” they can be produced by hospitals, pharmacies, laboratories, private practices of human or veterinary medicine, but also by other professions related to the human or veterinary body: aesthetics, body modifications (tattooing, piercing, etc.), thanatopraxia, clinical or non-clinical trials, health research and education. They can also be produced by individuals, such as diabetics. They are hazardous waste.

Four types of waste are considered, they must be separated from other waste, and thrown in a yellow bin with the symbol of biological danger.

Soft waste

Treatment equipment : compresses, dressings, pockets, syringes without needles…

Protective equipment : gloves, masks, sheets, gowns…

Sharps waste

Needles, scalpels, catheters…

Semi-liquid waste

All containers and blood products and other biological liquids : bags, bottles, tubes…

Anatomical waste

From the human body : (cysts, placentas, samples, organs, etc.)

For self-treatment individuals, such as diabetic patients, they can go to the pharmacy to request a yellow box for free: once complete, they can give the contents to the pharmacist. However, here, so-called soft waste is not concerned: the waste to be collected there is the prickly waste. However, here, so-called soft waste is not concerned: the waste to be collected there is the prickly waste.

Infectious clinical waste, in sorting centres, are subject to two types of treatment :

Incineration

It is mandatory for waste that may include Non-Conventional Transmissible Agents and that may cause damage to pretreatment machines (mainly metal cutting equipment)

Pretreatment by disinfection

This route allows waste to be collected and treated by communities. However, composting is automatically excluded because of the specific characteristics of this waste.

They must be separated from other waste and disposed of in a yellow bin marked with the biohazard symbol. They must always be filled with a plastic bag that is securely fastened in the container. Depending on the type of waste, these containers take different forms :

Icone Halibox

HALIBOX

Rigid plastic for sharp objects (syringes, needles, etc.)

Icone Halipack

HALIPACK

Rigid cardboard for non-sharp, non-liquid waste (compresses, masks, etc.)

Icone Bidon

BOTTLE

In bottle for liquid medical waste (blood, various human secretions, etc.)

For self-treatment patients such as diabetics, the needle must not be removed from the syringe, and it must be protected with the cap to avoid any risk of leakage. They should be disposed of in the upper part of the hermetically sealed container, which in turn should be disposed of at the bottom of the dry solid waste bin.

Infectious clinical waste, in sorting centres, are subject to two types of treatment :

Incineration

For medical waste presenting only an infectious risk.

Pre-treatment by sterilisation

They can then be used as fuel derived from waste.

For regions that do not have a infectious clinical waste centre, they can be sent to special waste incineration units.

ITALY

Waste can be identified under the CER 1801 codes, and is divided up as follows:

  • CER code 180100: waste from maternity clinics and waste associated with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease in humans.
  • CER code 180101: sharp objects (except 180103)
  • CER code 180102: anatomical parts and organs, including plasma bags and blood reserves (except 18 01 03)
  • CER code 180103: waste that must be collected and disposed of using special precautions to prevent infection
  • CER code 180104: waste which does not have to be collected and disposed of using special precautions to prevent infection (e.g. bandages, plasters, sheets, disposable clothing, sanitary towels).
  • CER code 180106: hazardous chemicals or chemicals containing hazardous substances
  • CER code 180107: chemical substances other than those mentioned in 18 01 06
  • CER code 180108: Cytotoxic and cytostatic medicinal products
  • CER Code 180109: Medicinal products other than those referred to in 18 01 08
  • CER Code 180110: Amalgam waste from dental procedures
  • CER Code 180200: wastes from research and the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of animal diseases
  • CER code 180202: wastes which must be collected and disposed of using special precautions to prevent infection
  • CER code 180203: waste which must not be collected and disposed of using special precautions to prevent infection

SOME REALIZATIONS

We can offer you effective and innovative solutions to treat this specific type of waste. Our teams will accompany you from the beginning to the end of the realization, and will respond to each of your requests.
We have the ability to rehabilitate your existing infectious clinical waste processing units, but our teams can also accompany you to design and build it entirely, to deliver it turnkey.
